Luke 19 – shortcode

Zacchaeus
  1. And having entered into the city, He was passing through Jericho.
  2. And behold, there was a man called Zacchaeus by name, and he was a chief tax collector, and he was rich.
  3. And he was seeking to see Jesus, who He is, and he wasn’t able to see from the crowd because he was small in stature.
  4. And having run to the front of the crowd, he climbed onto a sycamore-fig tree so that he could see Him, because He was about to pass through that area.
  5. And having looked up as He came upon the place, Jesus said to him: “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for it’s necessary for Me to stay in your house today.
  6. And he came down hurriedly and welcomed Him rejoicing.
  7. And having seen this, all were grumbling, saying: “He entered into a house to lodge with a sinful man.
  8. And having stood, Zacchaeus said to the Lord: “Behold Lord, I give half of my possessions to the poor; and if I defrauded anyone of anything, I repay it fourfold.”
  9. And Jesus said to him: “Salvation happened in this house today because he also is a son of Abraham,
  10. “for the Son of Man came to seek and to save the *lost.”
The Parable of the Ten Minas
  1. And while they‘re listening to these things, He spoke an additional parable because of Him being near Jerusalem, and because of them thinking that the kingdom of God is about to appear immediately.
  2. So He said: “A noble man traveled to a faraway land to receive a kingdom for himself and then to return.
  3. “And having summoned ten of his own slaves, he gave them ten minas1“minas” is the plural of “mina”, which was worth 100 denarii, which was equal to a day’s wage for unskilled labor.  Thus, a mina was worth 100 days wages for unskilled labor. and said to them: “Gain a profit until that time I come back.
  4. “But his citizens were detesting him and sent a delegation after him, saying: “We don’t want this man to reign over us.”
  5. “And it happened during his return after having received the kingdom, he also commanded these slaves to whom he had given the money to be summoned to him so that he could know what they gained in profit.
  6. “And the first slave presented himself, saying: “Lord, your mina gained ten more minas.”
  7. “And he told him: “Well done good slave.  Because you became faithful in very little, be in authority, having it over ten cities.
  8. “And the second slave came, saying: “Lord, your mina made five minas.”
  9. “And he also told this slave: “And you, be over five cities.”
  10. “And another slave came, saying: “Lord, behold, your mina, which I was keeping reserved in a handkerchief,2” handkerchief” is literal, referring to a piece of cloth used to wipe sweat from the brow or to a napkin.  Interestingly, this word is used in John 20:7 to describe the piece of cloth that had been used to cover Jesus’s face when he was buried.
  11. “for I was fearing you because you’re an austere man.  You pick up what you didn’t set down, and you reap what you didn’t sow.
  12. “He tells him: “You wicked slave!  I will judge you by the words from your mouth.  You had known that I’m an austere man, picking up what I didn’t set down and reaping what I didn’t sow?”
  13. “And so why3“why” is literally “because why” didn’t you give my silver to a bank?  And having come, I would’ve collected it with interest.”
  14. “And to the men *present, he said: “Take the mina from him and give it to the man having ten minas.
  15. “And they said to him: “Lord, he already has ten minas.”
  16. “I tell you that to every man having, more will be given to him.  But from the man not having, even what he has will be taken away.
  17. “Nevertheless, these enemies of mine — the men who didn’t want me to reign over them — bring them here and slay them in my presence.”
  18. And having said these things, He was traveling ahead, going up to Jerusalem.
The Triumphal Entry
  1. “And it happened that as He drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, to the mount called “of Olives”, He sent two of His disciples,
  2. saying: “Depart into the village opposite us, which after traveling into it, you will find a donkey colt *tied, on which not one man4“man” is literally “of men ever sat.  And having untied it, bring it here.
  3. “And if anyone asks you: “Why5“why” is literally “because why” are you untying it?”  You will reply like this: “Because the Lord has need of it.”
  4. And having departed, the men who were *sent found it just as He told them.
  5. And with them untying the donkey colt, its owners said to them: “Why are you untying the donkey colt?”
  6. And they said: “The Lord has need of it.”
  7. And they led it to Jesus, and having thrown their outer robes on the donkey colt, they put Jesus on it.
  8. And traveling ahead of Him, they were spreading their own outer robes on the road.
  9. And with Him already drawing near to the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began rejoicing, and began to praise God with a great voice for all the miracles which they saw,
  10. saying: “*Blessed is the King coming in the Lord’s name, peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
  11. And some of the Pharisees from the crowd said to Him: “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.”
  12. And answering, He said: “I tell you that if these men will be silent, then the stones will cry out.”
Lament over Jerusalem.
  1. And having seen the city as He approached it, He wept over it,
  2. saying: “If you knew in this day, even you would seek the things that lead to peace.  But presently they were hidden from your eyes,
  3. “because the days will come upon you when your enemies will encamp around you with a siege barricade, and they will surround you, and will press in on you from all sides,6Likely an allusion to Ezekiel 4:1-2, and/or Isaiah 29:3
  4. “and they will utterly demolish you and your children within you until you’re level with the ground,7“utterly demolish…  … until you’re level with the ground” is one word in Greek, which can also refer to burning a structure until it’s level with the ground.  In either case, the focus is complete destruction. and they won’t leave one stone upon another stone in you because you didn’t know the season of your visitation of judgement.”
Cleansing the Temple
  1. And having entered into the temple, He began to cast out the men selling,
  2. telling them: “It’s *written: And My house will be a house of prayer,8quotation/allusion to Isaiah 56:7 but you made it a den of robbers.”9quotation/allusion to Jeremiah 7:11
  3. And He was teaching every day in the temple.  And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking to destroy Him, and the foremost among the people were too.
  4. And they weren’t finding anything they could do, for all the people hung on His teaching, listening intently.
